Isatu was born in the village of Rogbeshe. She is about 9 years old. I say “about” because, in general, parents don’t know the age of their children. The majority of them are illeterate.
She lives in a traditional house, with her whole family - which means a good 20 odd people.
Once a day she eats a meal of rice and sauce made of either a “manioc-leaves” or soften patato skins or with a thin soup. However, sometimes some dried bits of fish are added.
Mealtime is after school, at around 3 pm, which means that there is nothing in the evening or in the morning.
Isatu often goes to school on a empty tummy.
She is currently in her third year at one of two primary schools in the village. Every year she gets two pairs of new shoes, two sets of school uniform and a satchel with everything she needs for school.
Two years ago, however, she caught Polio – her parents had neglected to vaccinate her – even though it is free! Lack of awareness is often the cause of this. The circulation in her shoulders, wrist and left hands stiffenend up. During my last visit, I massaged and relaxed her fingers, so that she could shake my hand. I showed her mother to do it but I doubt she has time for it.
In February 2011 she participated in the Women “Bondos” against Amputation. She is now an excepted member of their group and has the right to attend all their parties.
